Family Learning

Hello and welcome to Family Learning!

Families are the main context of learning for most people. Learning within the family is usually more lasting and influential than any other. Family life provides a foundation and context for all learning.'

Riches beyond price: making the most of family learning, NIACE, 1995

What is Family Learning?

Family Learning describes a whole range of activities and programmes where parents, grandparents, children and carers are involved in learning. Sometimes it involves the adults and children learning together at the same time.   All our courses are designed to improve parents' skills and increase their confidence; many parents gain certificates in literacy and maths and move into further learning or employment.

What type of courses do you do?

Firstly we have Wider Family Learning (WFL) which includes our creative courses and these are designed to encourage new learners into Family Learning using a fun – learning through play approach.  Our second stream is Family Language, Literacy and Numeracy (FLLN) and these courses are designed to advance and progress learners with their own literacy and numeracy skills and those of their children.  See the attached Family Learning Prospectus for all the course details.

Who delivers the courses?

We have a team of experienced and qualified tutors who deliver all of our Family Learning courses on your behalf.

Why should I book a Family Learning course?

The benefits of family learning are far reaching:

  • It helps schools and parents to work more closely together
  • It encourages parents to gain confidence in their own ability to learn.
  • It can act as a key factor in raising the achievement levels of children.
  • It aims to improve motivation, build self-esteem and help both children and adults to become effective learners.
  • It provides opportunities for children to help their parents, and in these ways it enhances and enriches family life.
  • It promotes lifelong learning.
