The School Governor Service

The School Governor Service provides a consultancy, advice and guidance service to school governors. We are highly experienced in dealing with governing body and school leadership issues, members of the team are practising governors themselves.

The service provides an all inclusive package to school governors. This includes an annual training programme, providing a comprehensive range of courses for governors, access to guidance, advice and information about governance issues, a telephone helpline, half Termly newsletter (Notepad) and Termly 'Briefing Notes' to sign post issues of importance to governing bodies. In addition the service administers the recruitment and appointment of governors, maintains a database of all governors (approx. 3,000) and undertakes statutory work in relation to governing body constitution and procedures.

The three core activities provided for all governing bodies are:

  • The governing body constitution and procedural matters
  • Administering the process of governor recruitment
  • Ensuring governing bodies are aware of their responsibilities

We provide the following services to schools, governors and governing bodies on a subscription basis:

We hope that all governing bodies will opt for the all inclusive annual subscription to the Governing Schools package which is a combination of the training and advice packages.  However, there is the option to purchase the services separately. For information relating to the cost of subscruiption for your school please contact School Governor Service directly.

History of School Governors

Governors have been in existence for over six hundred years and the first governing body was recorded in Winchester School.  In 1870 when schooling became the right of all children, it was laid down that every school should have group of local people to assist in running of the school.   The Education Act 1980 gave a right to parents to express a preference for school, to have a great deal of information about its policies and to have two elected representatives on governing bodies.  In 1981 in an Act designed to support children with special needs parents were given some influence on how needs were assessed and governors a duty to see that those needs were met.

The 1986 Education Act gave parents better representation and further rights to information, annual reports and an annual meeting to discuss the running of the school.

The 1998 School Standards and Framework Act increased parent governor representation in almost all schools and each LEA to have representation of parent governors on its education committee.
